Club History
Golden Falls Waterski Club dates back to 1959 - one of Europe’s oldest active Clubs. The magnificent fresh water Golden Falls Lake just on Dublin’s doorstep, makes it within easy reach of over one million potential Skiers and Riders !

A great debt of gratitude is owed to our original “explorers” who first discovered our Lake – the Johnson and Bewley families – and also to Alan Dagg who set the standard for the next generation before he moved to Perth in Western Australia. The next generation during the 1980’s and 1990’s and into the next century was spearheaded by Des Burke-Kennedy and Harry Bridges. This was a period of rapid development, fundraising and the hosting of major international Waterski competitions. With Carl Cautley's help, the fundraising partnership with both Guinness and Irish Distillers had a major impact on the Club’s facilities. Included were a new Jump Ramp, a new Club boat every 24 months, the creation of the Golden Falls lakeside Boardwalk, landscaping and Clubhouse upgrading – and the construction of stainless steel Slalom and Jump Courses and Jetty Gangway. The invention and introduction of the latest measurement technology by Donal Connolly with his SplashEye electronics, now a global success story, added greatly to the quality of competitions at all levels in Ireland and overseas.

Golden Falls has hosted more major International Waterski Competitions than any other Club on our shores - including a World Cup Final, the famous Paddy Classics and other Internationals. Exactly 17 International Waterski Records were achieved on our waters, including the unbeaten Ladies World Jump Record of 48.6m by Emma Sheers (AUS) in August 1996 on a 5ft Jump Ramp. Over 70 million viewers watched that World Record performance on Eurosport and ESPN Channels !

The Club also specialises in helping beginners to make the perfect start ! Both potential Skiers and Wakeboard Riders are very welcome. In 2012, the repair of bank erosion will be a major challenge and the Club is working closely with the ESB to resolve this. The next phase will involve the broadening of participation – and especially by youngsters and women. Special Open Days will focus on both groups - watch our Website for advance details.

When Ireland’s President Mary Robinson presented the Paddy Classic Trophies in August 1995 to the Waterski World Cup winners, she too had a great day to remember here at Golden Falls !
